The Laws for State Funded Forced Sterilization in the US Are Still on the Books
Elaine Riddick, 58, was raped when she was just thirteen years old. Her rapist was never brought to justice but the day Elaine gave birth, doctors sterilized her on order from the State of North Carolina. What happened to Riddick in North Carolina happened to more than 60,000 people from the 1920’s to the 1970s when 32 states sponsored Eugenics programs in an attempt to cut welfare costs and filter out people considered undesirable.
Like most state funded sterilization survivors, Elaine had no idea she had been raped of her right to reproduce until she and her husband were trying to have children. “The doctors all said ‘that I had been butchered.’ (more…)
SILENT: THE HIV EPIDEMIC NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT
There’s an AIDs/HIV epidemic in America and no one is talking about it. Zee Williams wasn’t a drug user and was in a monogamous relationship, so like nearly half of the adults in America she didn’t think there was a need to take an HIV test.
But 80% of new HIV cases are among black and Latina women who are not promiscuous and do not use drugs according to the Center for Disease Control.
